I would like to plant kind of a Japanese looking garden this year.?

  1. Don't. The Japanese are anti-american. Remember pearl harbor? Think about.
  2. I think it's a great idea. Tell us where you live so we can suggest plants. You might want a pagoda and/ or a little footbridge. I saw one once that had elongated river stones under it to evoke the sense of water. It was a lot less complicated than building a stream through their yard. You can use pretty variegated grasses, and dwarf trees that mimic bonsai - depending on your zone. It might also be fun to have an area of small pea gravel that you can rake into different patterns, as a relaxing activity.
  3. I would say a variety of conifer such as a dwarf Japenese black pine A sargent juniper For the the best plants look up Bonsai nurseries They will have loads of japanese plants
