What seeds to plant in September vegetable garden in Virginia?

We are SW of Roanoke (our season is behind Roanoke about 2 weeks)

  2. When do you get winter freezes? If not until Nov-Dec you can grow lettuce, radish, those fast and cold tolerant crops. Also you can plant garlic now for harvesting next summer. Otherwise I'd work on building up the soil by sowing a "green manure" crops such as vetch, buckwheat, clover, or annual ryegrass. Let this grow and be killed back by the winter cold and turn under next spring. The dead material on the top prevents erosion or ultra violet sun damage to the soil. (don't let any green manure go to seed or else it will become a weed problem)
