Free Garden Catalogs

You're poor and just moved into a new house with nothing. What are the first things you buy for your health?

OK, basically I'm trying to figure out, what things are at the top of your priority for living a healthy life, especially if you don't have the money to buy "everything." Assume that you have basic food, but nothing out of the ordinary. List as many things as you like that you think would be an immediate priority for your limited budget. So... is your priority high quality food items, such as extra virgin olive oil, raw milk, almonds, etc.? Or maybe some sort of vitamin or supplement? Or, is your priority things in the kitchen to help you cook healthier foods, such as a juicer or good pots and pans? Or, perhaps it's equipment, such as an exercise bike or an inverter machine. Or, maybe you'd get things to have a healthy house, such as an air filter or water filter. Would you get seeds for a garden? Healthy cleaning supplies? Anything goes. Those are just a few thoughts, but be specific. I'm asking this same question in a couple sections, since I think different philosophies of health might have whole different ideas... Lol. OK, you have basic living stuff. Just not stuff for living a healthy lifestyle...

  1. bed, and refrigerator! duuhh!
  2. It's a kind of generic question but I'll do my best :) First off I would probably figure out my budget. Once that is done I would buy organic veggies and fruit, some (hopefully organic) nuts I would say almonds are a great way to start. If you buy organic almonds you can make your own almond milk and almond cheese. Do a couple "how to make ___" searches online. I just made my first batch of almond milk it was WONDERFUL! Plus you can use the extra pulp to make bread, cookies, almond butter...the sky is the limit. If you eat meat, then some free range meat, and eggs. If you have money left I would focus on herbs (if you have space buy seeds and grow yourself!) and natural soaps, shampoos, laundry soap. (FYI Soap Nuts are easy, cheap and seem to work great for laundry. You can use them for all your cleaning needs in the home. You can buy a pound of them for $8.00 plus shipping at mountainroseherbs.com. I don't work for them I just love them) Start with your body. Start slow. Making any healthy choice in your life is a good choice. So even if you don't have much money to spend do the best you can do with what you have. Buy your produce, meat, milk, eggs at a natural food store but maybe the other stuff you can find at a cheaper store. There are so many ways to live healthy on a budget. Kudos for making a good life choice! :)
  3. ok, i have been poor and tryied to go green and be healthy all the same time ,and this is what i did...for cleaning, i bought club soda and used that as windex, lemons, baking soda and salt were my cleaning agents, as well as every day dish detergent mixed with h2o in a spray bottle, i bought a humidifier, and for food, i lived off mostly bags of dried beans (that i cooked in a crock pot) canned veggies, and frozen fruits and veggies, and cheap fresh ones like apples, potatoes, and anything else cheap that was in season, i dont know if that was what you were looking for but i hope it helps
  4. I have personal experience here. When I was broke, I just made sure that my foods weren't processed, and took a good multivitamin. The most important supplement for our overall health and well-being is water. Drink tons and tons daily, and find some time to walk in the sunshine. You'll be fine
  5. a lot of soy milk
  6. Tea. Good for both the body and soul.
