Has anyone planted a foundation garden recently? What plants did you choose?

I am planting my garden and it has NO plants except 2 camellias, a brunsfelsia, and something I don't remember the name of- a pteris? I would like to know what plants you have. There are so many, it is hard to decide!

  1. I am having the same problem, but all I have are roses and barberry in the backyard (thorny!). Your sun and soil conditions will make a big difference. For instance, my house is north facing so it is very shady, so I have to look for plants that will do well in the shade. I also have clay soil, so that's a concern too. Another thing you want to keep in mind is the size you want your plants to get, or if you are going to keep them trimmed, and make sure you get some evergreen plants so it doesn't look dead in the winter. Some common ones are boxwood and holly. A yard near my house has what I think is boxwood trimmed into spheres near the walls, a couple purple barberry here and there, also trimmed in spheres, a small red japanese maple tree, and a couple of those pretty pyramid shaped evergreens ( I forget the name) on each side of the entrance to the porch. They also had a line of many Arborvitae, but those keep dying and getting replaced. Overall it looks really nice and well-kept, I really like their color scheme. I would recommend trying to find plants native to your area, often they are easier to grow. Also you could go to a local nursery, bring a picture of your yard and house, and they will help you design and pick out the plants. Costs a lot to buy them that way, though. There is a ton of info on the internet, it's just really time-consuming to do all the research, and for me, make the decisions. Good luck and I hope my answer is useful to you. :)
