How long after I use Weed-B-Gon can I plant a flower garden?
I am a beginner gardener and I am reclaiming two flower garden spaces in my yard. I am using weed-b-gon because the previous owners of our house let the gardens get overgrown with weeds. So how long after I have used the weed-b-gon can I start planting flowers without them getting killed?

- I would wait about a week before you start to plant flowers after killing the weeds. It would also be a good idea to turn over the soil and add a little lime and peat moss to take care of the soil if any weed killer remains.
- Read the container.
- I would also wait a week for the weed killer to do its job, then remove the weeds and work up the soil and then plant. Two days after use, Round-Up will not effect any new plants.
- I would use roundup to kill the weeks. Weed-B-Gone takes about a week, roundup takes about a day or two. I would wait a week after spraying either product. Use PREEN or some other week control product after you plant. This will keep new seeds from sprouting that were not killed by the herbicide.
- I am a Professional Landscaper of 12 years and I would suggest before you plant anything, remove everything within the area if you are planting new plants. Strip the entire garden down to bare dirt and put down a "Weed Barrier Fabric" called "Typar". It comes on a roll and it is heavy duty and lasts for years. You can purchase it at any good garden nursery and don't forget the "Fabric pins" which hold the fabric down on the ground. With scissors, you can cut circular holes into the fabric in the area's where you want to plant your flowers. Once your weed barrier is down and staked and your holes are cut, plant your perennials and finish the project by putting down a 3 inch layer of mulch around your plants. Your garden will look beautiful and Professional and it is easy(The fabric roll comes with instructions). Try this and I think you will pat yourself on the back when you are done. 3 inches of mulch will also keep the weeds at bay versus germinating right on uncovered ground. The mulch will also retain moisture longer and keep your plants/flowers healthier longer. If I were there, I would do it for ya, I have done this thousands of times.....PS, stick with "Preen" for weed control in the future and forget the other gimmicks like Weed-B-gone, Round-up, etc, etc. They are harmful to your plants and not as environmentally safe as the Preen.
- This is Lee Ann from Ortho. Do not replant in the area for at least 3-4 weeks. Ortho Weed B Gon is a lawn weed killer and should not be used in garden areas. After 3 to 4 weeks to make sure the area is clear of herbicide and safe to plant try a radish test. If the radishes germinate in about 7 to 10 days then the area is safe to plant. DO NOT consume the radishes. In the future I recommend using Roundup Weed and Grass Killer in garden areas. This is a non-selective herbicide so make sure to read and understand the label before using. If you have questions call us at 800-225-2883.
