- lol it wont work, not all plants are aquatic....and yes if u take garden plants and put them in your tank, they will die, doesnt matter what filter you have in there. Google aquatic plants and you should be able to see the types of plants for your aquarium. I have Anubias Nanas and some Java Ferns - low light plants n grow very slowly.
- Most garden plants (terrestrial) don't belong underwater. They will most likely get soggy and die. Some, like the aluminum plant, can survive a while underwater - but without being above water level at least some of the time, they die. Soaking the plants in hot water may destroy the plant cells and kill them - you'd do better soaking them in a mild bleach solution to clean them. I don't believe a filter is necessary for plant survival, but it is for fish etc.
- Most garden plants won't work. Mother-in-Law tongue should be rinsed in cold water. Remove any hint of soil from their roots and fully submerge the plant. I use to do this sort of thing and could have told you a half dozen plants that live in areas that go from dry to fully submerged in the course of a year. Many will work in the aquarium temporarily. It was this knowledge that allowed me to take tanks to fish shows and have plants no one could identify in the tank. Sorry, I can only remember the mother in law tongue tonight.
