Indoor herb garden help?

I am completely new to gardening so I really have no clue about how to plant or care for plants. I am wanting to start an indoor herb garden, I just don't know where to start. I went to my local Saturday market and got an idea on which herbs I'd like, mostly for culinary purposes since I like to cook. So if I buy the already planted and partially grown herbs where do I go from there? Best potting soil, planters, fertilizers? What is the best combination of herbs to grow all together? I've done a lot of reading online but every site has told me different things so I am just confused. I need all the advice I can get, thanks :)

  1. Re pot in a 8 inch or larger pot and place in an area that receives at least 5 hour of direct sunlight and then bright light. Some herbs are perennial (sage) and some are annuals (cilantro). The annuals will need to be continually restarted from seed for longer availability. Fertilize lightly.
  2. To start your own herb garden you have two options, you can go to your local nursery and purchase some seedlings or grow your own from seed. Either way is fine, but if you are a novice the seedlings are the way to go. It is a lot easier when starting with a young plant that has established a root system and is actively growing.
  3. Plan your garden before planting it. Consider the herbs you want to plant and what you'll use them for. Herbs grow in various ways; some herbs, such as thyme, are low growing and spreading while others, such as parsley, grow in clumps. Mint is a taller, vigorously growing herb which often needs to be contained. Herbs are considered either annuals or perennials and many will bloom just like more traditional flowers. List or draw your garden on paper first. If you know the size of your garden you'll easily be able to choose the appropriate plants. Likewise, if you have certain herbs in mind you'll able to plan the right size garden.
