Free Garden Catalogs

Why are online garden cataloges allowed to sell invasive species?

For example here in NH there are certain laws about the sale and purchase of invasive plants, shrubs and trees. It is illegal for me to buy or sell these certain ones with in my state. Does anyone know why I can just get online and purchase them for my yard if my state finds them so invasive they have to create laws to inhibit the spread of them? I do see that there are SOME restrictions as to the sale of certain plant life to certain states, but the restrictions do not go as far as the invasive species lists.

  1. What is invasive in your area is often fine in other areas, but I do agree that invasive species should not be sold at all. They can and do get transported by mistake and create problems.
  2. Some sources aren't very careful about things like that. Others warn that certain plants can't be shipped to certain areas. They don't say why, but I will assume that issues of legality and invasiveness are involved.
  3. What is considered invasive in your stat May not be invasive in my state. So Online sites like that are allowed to sell them. It is not illegal for them to do that. And some of your big name (online) garden centers even put in the plants detail that they can not be sold or shipped to certain states. So I suggest Just finding out what is not to be sold, or planted in your state before going to any sites that sell plants of that nature. That way you can Just look over them all together.
  4. I do not know the answer but I share your concern and frustration. You might find more information here on the New England Wildflower Society's page of invasive plant links: http://www.newfs.org/search?SearchableText=invasive+plants
