how many years would it take 'Forsythia x intermedia' to get to 8 feet tall?

I am wanting to incorporate some early-spring flowering deciduous shrubs in my garden designs. I have found this plant grows very fast but I would like to know how long it will take for it to get to about 7 or 8 feet tall at least. It is currently about 95cm tall. thanks

  1. It grows more than a foot a year, but because of its arching nature, the upward total is usually only about a foot a year. Mine is about 4 1/2 feet tall after 5 years.
  2. 3-5 years
  3. I received a bunch of these in bloom from my neighbor last spring, I put them in for rooting, then transferred to the garden and now they are at least 5-6 feet in length. I think the zone you live in has a lot to do with how fast they grow, I have a very long growing season, plus I keep them well watered and always apply a slow release fertilizer.
  4. Don't grow that forsythia, it's overplanted all over the uk. Instead grow Forsythia suspensa - much more beautiful and graceful.
