Planting a flower garden?
This summer my girlfriend and I plan to plant a flower garden. We have never done something like this before so we need some help. When should we start planting? My backyard has a mixture of sun and shade, so what flowers should we plant. We want a decently sized garden, maybe a 10 foot by 8 foot space. Is there any guide to this we should look at? So we can learn how to do this and get started! thanks a bunch :]

- I would go to a library rather than ask on line because it will have books on plants that fit within your climate zone. it will even tell you how to condition your type of soil. It is a lot of work and to appreciate the "fruits of your labor", be safe and get the proper info. You will probably want to plant both annuals and perennials and it could end up in a waste of money if you don't prepare accordingly. You might ask a neighbor if you have noticed any prosperous looking plants in the last good season in their yards. Have fun with it as this a great way to stay healthy!
- The kinds of flowers you grow will be determined in a measure by the amount of sunlight available. This will vary from bed to bed, from one side of the house to the other. Most flowers will thrive in full sun but a few require shade. Others are shade tolerant, though doing better with a greater amount of sunlight. So it is possible to have flowers in the shade of trees, shrubs and buildings even where no direct sunlight reaches. Such plants as ferns, many wild flowers, and begonias have to be protected from the summer sun, for otherwise they may sun-scorch. When making a plan, it is important to know how tall each kind of flower grows so as not to plant tall growing ones in front of low ones.
