Free Garden Catalogs

Seniors, are you already planning your garden for Spring?

As I sit in my house with ice outside, I have all my seed catalogues close at hand....and am already thinking of what varieties of food to grow in the community garden project we set up for the children. Are you going to have a vegetable/flower patch again this year....what are you planning to grow? I am so looking forward to reading your answers.....I KNOW we have a lot of folks in our section that just love digging in the dirt, and fooling with plants with the complete contentment of a child. I am nearly chomping at the bit to get my hands in dirt....SPRING SPRING get here soon!!!

  1. I live in the Southern hemisphere, so I am getting ready for winter.
  2. Last year, the squirrels, rabbits and deer ate just about everything I grew. I had tomatoes that were huge and eaten on the vines. I think it was because of the intense heat and the fact that we had no rain and they had no food. I planted 3 shrubs that the deer ate, they actually ate the roots out of the ground on 2 of them. Right now I'm researching plants and shrubs that the deer will stay away from, and that's what I'll plant, but I won't plant any vegetables this year. I wish I had saved my B-B gun.
  3. I am going to try pink lilies of the valley and white bleeding hearts this year. And the usual morning glories and zinnias, four o'clocks and cornflowers. I'm doing astilbes for the first time. For veggies, tomatoes and bell peppers.
  4. alpines popping through today , seeds put out last november and other seed that need or endure the cold weather .
  5. i haven't sat down and plotted it out or drawn any pictures of it yet. but it's being formulated in my minds eye every day. my veggie garden will have the usual...tomatoes, peppers; sweet and hot, cauliflower, broccoli, onions, kohlrabi etc... don't have a flower patch but i have roses (climbers) along the fence line and clematis and passion flowers around the trees. winter hit the halfway mark(calendar wise anyway) on january 23.
  6. yes and we are increasing the size of the vegetable garden and thinking of adding some berry bushes as we replace shrubs. Also I'm starting a small herb garden. With the prices at the grocery stores, I think more people will start thinking this way.
  7. Yes. I've been establishing my gardens since I moved here 10 years ago. There was no hint of a landscape (just evergreens.) Every year I am planting some perennials (thank you spell checker) in one of my "old lady gardens." No sign of Spring yet, except the days are a wee bit longer as we go.
  8. My brother and I were talking about just that last night. He and a neighbor of his start their tomato plants in a green house in February so they are ready to be planted in late May
  9. Every year I spend 6 months in California and I'll be getting back there in early February. My Lady has a huge garden below her mountain-top house, made up of three terraces, each 80 yards long and six feet wide. In the beginning, between the odd decorative tree and shrub, I planted a whole array of annuals. The deer and rabbits soon taught me who really owns the place..! I quickly switched to deer resistant plants and started using something called 'Liquid Fence' to shower all the plants in the garden. The stuff stinks to high heaven but is extraordinarily effective, even after the rains. Applied every week or ten days, it soon loses it's initial bad smell and then can only be sensed by the animals and it also gives the plants a bad taste. Of course, you don't want to be showering your tomatoes and lettuce with it..! To fill the gaps where the annuals used to be, I covered the whole garden with redwood chips, which have a very high acid content and consequently, cut down on the weed sprouting. That's a big one, weeding 240 yards of terraces..! I replanted the 12 roses in large tubs and brought them up onto the deck. With the gate closed, that tends to keep the deer out. And yes, I started using a BB handgun with flat headed pellets. I would hit a deer's rump and the beast would look at me and say, 'Yes.? Were you saying something..?' The damn thing was useless. Shot a pellet at 650 f.p.s. So I got me a gun with a bit more clout. On the Net I found a firm called Gamo**** and bought a 'Whisper' air rifle. It shoots at 1,200.f.p.s. and, using flathead pellets, so as not to pierce the deer's hide, I use that, hit them on the rump and they take off like a bat out of Hell..! Never to return (I think...) Has an amazing range too. A target 100 years away still gets a very healthy whack on the backside, so it's a valuable addition to Garden Guard. ****This is their ad. The Gamo Big Cat Series, two very popular and affordable air rifles that will go the distance for 1000's of rounds. Durable design suitable for at hunting and target shooting in any weather condition. Equipped with a power plant able to yield a sizzling 1200 fps and match grade accuracy with PBA® ammunition. This rifle is also fitted with a 4x32 air rifle scope, perfect for your precision pest control.
  10. Yes I am. We've been gardening so long, what we plant has become pretty routine. But, we usually have a mixture of the following: beans, squash, cucumbers, carrots, onions, tomatoes, beets, cabbage, and peas. I might plant radishes and peppers this year if we have room. In addition, we have lots of raspberries and strawberries. Good luck with your garden! 11. I too am ready for Spring. It is 41 degrees here and I venture out to take a look where I want to plant certain things. This year I plan to plant a Wisteria vine on the side of the carport. They bloom in Spring and look like a bunch of purple grapes hanging down. After the flowers fade the vine is covered in green leaves through the first frost. This year I am going to plant flowers in large pots instead of in the ground. I already have roses all around the front of the house, I enjoy going to Lowe's and Home Depot for trees and shrubs. We have two old apple trees that were here when we bought the house. We share the apples with the horses. Hurry up spring!! Poppy
  12. Yes. But since I can no long bend down to the ground I will be doing container gardening. I have flowers and a few veggies. We like to grow acorn squash, cucumbers, and tomatoes. I love the flowers on the veggie vines. I have two large ivies in containers in a south facing window. One has grown up the window. It is so nice to see greenery!!! I look at them everyday. The sun shining through the window makes my day. lol Happy gardening to you, gardening friend.
  13. I'm not planning a garden but I am planning on doing lots of work in my backyard. It needs to be sodded with some type of grass that will thrive in shade plus tolerate the constant traffic from my dogs. Think I will plant some more rose bushes too. Longing for Spring! I do hate the cold dreary winter months.
  14. Squash, tomatoes, greenbeans and bottle gourds.
