How can I remove the husks from sunflower seeds?
This year I've grown some sunflowers which have, the seed catalogue says, edible seeds. My question is: how do I get them out of the husk? I can do it individually, but it takes ages.

- Very carefully.
- I've just done a web search and can only find huge industrial machines - no prices but probably run into the thousands. You could try giving them a quick blast in a hot frying pan (no oil or fat) and then see if the husks become more brittle and thus come off easier. The ones I buy to eat are already de - husked, I leave the ones I grow out for the birds, they will happily chomp through a head a day in the winter, in the meantime I store them in the loft.

- Just rub your hand over them and theyll fall out, any tough ones will stay in and let them alone for a few days then do the same thing theyll drop out
