finding the dimensions?
an achitect designs a rectangular flower garden such that the width is exactly two-thirds of the length. if 260 ft of antique picket fencing are to be used to enclose the garden, find the dimensions of the garden.

- W L=2W/3 2L+2W=260 2(2W/3)+2W=260 4W/3+2W=260 10W/3=260 W=78 L=52
- if we use an arbitrary variable 'x' to represent the length of the garden, we will have width = (2/3)x. perimeter = x + x + (2/3)x + (2/3)x = (10/3)x therefore, (10/3)x = 260 10x = 780 x = 78 therefore, the length is 78 ft while the width is (2/3 multiply by 78) = 52ft. cheeers!~
- if x is the width, then the length is 3/2x. Thus we have 2x + 2(3/2x) = 260 2x+3x=260 x = 52, which is the width and the length is 78
- the width equals 52.05 ft and the length equals 78.07 ft
- length = 77.9 ft width = 52.1ft
