When is the best time to start or plant a salsa garden?

In southern Indiana. Most of the plants will be from seed.

  1. I always start indoors a few weeks before mothers day and move them outside around mothers day...depending on if there is going to be a frost
  2. There is some really great information on when to plant what vegetables at the local Lowe's Home Improvement or other hardware store. In short, every plant has a certain time that it needs to be planted depending on the climate zone you are in. So, just look up the particular seed types that you will be planting and find the zone. You will get a one -to - two month window of the optimal planting time.
  3. Assuming that your salsa will contain tomatoes, onions, garlic, jalapenos and cilantro, the planting times will vary. Start pepper seeds and tomato seeds indoors 2 months before the last expected frost in your area. When all danger of frost has passed and your seedlings are 4-6 inches tall, you can transplant them into a larger container or into the ground. Cilantro seeds should also be started indoors about 6 weeks before the last expected frost. They can be transplanted into the ground or larger container when the weather is warm. You can also grow cilantro inside as long as you have a spot that gets plenty of sun. The garlic and onions can be planted as soon as the soil is workable in the early spring. The following link has lots of good info about planting, watering, fertilizing and harvesting the veggies you'll need to make salsa. They even have a couple of good salsa recipes. 4. First, find the last frost date of your area. See Indiana Vegetable Planting Calendar web address below. http://www.hort.purdue.edu/hort/ext/Pubs/ho/HO_186.pdf Second, see Starting Seeds Indoors from Purdue University for date to start seed indoors: http://www.hort.purdue.edu/ext/ho-14.pdf Onions - Plant onion sets outdoors. Cilantro - After all danger of frost, plant seed directly in garden. Does not transplant well. Have fun!
