Gardening: I tried to plant some organic melon seeds outside and the birds ate half of them and...?

has anyone else had an experience like this and what can I do to stop those little turd birds. Fortunately I have more of these seeds.

1. How many did you plant? I have a bunch of 3 liter pop bottles with the bottoms cut out, that I put over the seeds and push into the ground a bit to stabilize them. They work like little cold frames, protecting the seeds and seedlings from wind, birds, hail, etc, until they get big enough to stand on their own. That doesn't work too well if you have a really big garden though.
