What are some shopping areas/stores in Sitka, Alaska?

What are some of the popular, fashionable stores in Sitka? I am particularly interested in stores that sell designer clothing, lingerie, shoes, makeup, etc. Can you give me some names and brief descriptions of some of the best shops? I would prefer answers from people who live there, have lived there or have visited. I read that shopping in Sitka is limited and most people order online or from catalogues. Is this true?

  2. You are right. Shopping is quite limited in Sitka. Most people shop by mail order or go shopping on their trips to Juneau, Anchorage or Seattle. Many of the stores are aimed at the cruise ship passenger. I was there last summer and can only recall one store that might have what you would describe as fashionable clothing. It's on Lincoln Street and I think it's called Brenner's. They have a mix of nicer quality clothing, jewelry and gift items. There is a shoe store. I think it was called the Walk Rack. They had nice shoes, but not Dior or anything. The lifestyle in Sitka is casual and people are not judged by their clothing or expected to dress up. The other clothing I saw there was either furs for the tourists, work clothing, outdoor clothing, or clothing for teens. Sitka has no stores like Macy's, no Lancome counters, etc. Sitka is a beautiful place and the people are wonderful, friendly and down-to-earth. No snobs in Sitka. Everyone is welcome and it's a place where a newcomer can fit right in.
  3. There are no stores like you describe in Sitka. The closest thing would be the Salvation Army where you can buy used versions of the clothes you are talking about. The nearest larger city is Juneau and their only clothing department store (Gottshalks) closed this summer. The only "larger" places to buy clothes in Juneau is Walmart and Fred Meyer. Many residents in SE Alaska either buy their clothes online or take a yearly trip to Seattle or Anchorage, usually at the end of summer, where they can buy their back-to-school and Christmas items in one trip or they combine their shopping needs with their annual vacations. People in Sitka / SE Alaska don't "dress up". Even business attire is very casual. Jeans or Carhartts are the norm. Dressing up is reserved for job interviews, weddings, funerals, running for public office, or going to court.
  4. You should probably order online or go to juneau. Just FYI Juneau does not have a gottchalks anymore.
