Does this count as a rock garden?

Would it be a rock garden if I take a large rock(s) and put soil in the large holes and then plant the special flowers? What I want to do is have something unique in my yard that is fun and not a huge project. And how would I plant the flowers in the rock?

  1. lol, i guess you could call it that! but a rock garden is really a piece of land that you cover with rocks. usually pretty rocks but rocks nonetheless! planting a flower inside a rock would be very interesting and it is fabulous idea!! i'd say the best way would be to drill large holes into the rocks, either by yourself or by hiring someone to do it for you. or you could probably even find flower pots that look like rocks online or in a store! good luck, and kudos for coming up with such a cute idea!!
  2. i seen something like that done with succulents and cactus, it looked really nice. i have been working on a rock garden for 2 years, and it is finally taking shape. But because i am in california i am not paying for rocks where they build house i will fallow. after grading the dirt all kinds of river rocks pop up and that is where find the unique shapes now i will be looking for some with holes. But i would look at plant that have shallow roots. and very low maintenance.
  3. Sounds like a lot of work...make sure you have some Advil handy and the name of a good massage therapist and chiropractor handy! LOL. I have seen chunks of pumice (lava) with African Violets growing in them. Pumice is fairly easy to drill using just a screwdriver. Since it is so porous, the roots of plants placed in the bigger drilled holes get watered. You might want to get a few chunks of lava rock (pumice) at a local landscaping supply center to incorporate into your rock garden. I believe the traditional style rock garden has pockets of soil between the large rocks that plants go into. Vines and creeping plants look nice in these as they eventually drape down and around. It is a long process to make it look natural and people can spend years perfecting that "natural look". Be aware that yellow jackets and certain bees also LOVE rock gardens and frequently build their nests in them, so proceed with caution. I experienced that once at age 5 and never forgot it! Ever been chased down the street by enraged stinging insects? Fun... Have fun and Green Side UP!
