How much grass seeds should we buy for a 40ft by 20ft garden?

Got a party to entertain in May this year. We are trying to grow our own grass in the garden and frankly laying Turf is too expensive. We are also having arguments over which brand of seeds or name of seeds to buy. Any help appreciated. Okay not actual number of seeds but how many packets. Got a party to entertain in May this year. 1. 24,467 seeds.
  2. I would of thought that it would tell you on the seed packet how much each packet Will cover. I do not know what brand of seeds are best, but if you ask at the gardening centre they should be able to advise you. There is a lot of information about gardening on Google, so it might be worth having a look on there.
  3. Ok..Here is a calculator to help you out. http://www.managemylife.com/mmh/jsp/tools/calculators/grass_seed_calculator.jsp If your lawn is sparse it's best to use starter fertilizer when you place the seed... Get a soil test kit at Rona or Home depot Vigoro or C-I-L take several samples of the dirt on the lawn ..mix it together and test...see what nutrients your lawn needs a few weeks after laying the seeds and the starter. Seeding should occur after the outside temps are pretty reliable @ 55+F. http://www.vigoro.ca/soiltest.php Here is a zone list for the type of seed http://www.lawngrasses.com/info/climate-map.html As far as brand....Seriously anything goes. Make sure you have the dirt aerated and water in 1" daily in the early AM until you see growth ( normally 10 to 20 days) Don't cut it till it gets to 3" and then never more then 1"...Leave it 2 1/2" in the spring and fall and 3" in the summer months.
  4. The best type of seed to use would be with a high percentage of Rye grass as this is a very hard wearing species of grass. You should be aiming at applying the seed at approx 25 to 37 grams per m2. The exact amount will be detailed on the back of the packet ( Approx 1 clenched handful per m2 ) Approx 7 days before applying the seed apply a pre seed fertilizer ( growmore ) A good supplier is British seed houses.
  5. Lawn size is 40*20=800 sq feet. 800/9= 89 square yards. Grass seed needs 1 ounce per yard. Therefore 89 ounces or 5.5 pounds of seed. A hard wearing rye grass mixture would be best, but I doubt it will be ready by May this year.
