Has anyone used or heard of Amazoy zoysia grass?

We saw an add in a gardening catalogue for this "amazing" grass that you receives as plugs. It is excellent for horrible soil and we have tried everything for the past 6 seasons to get half decent grass in our yard. I am just wondering if anyone has used it and if they had any luck with it. Also, how tedious is the planting of the the 1,000's of plugs?

  1. From reference books this is a fairly new offer from seed merchants, etc.Seems it's a good plant for stabilising sandy, loose soil. Planting 1000's of plugs is a guaranteed formula for backache,we plant an awful lot in our nursery beds, boring, boring!
  2. I haven't tried Zoysia grass myself but my next door neighbor took three plugs from his brother's lawn and set them in his front yard. Of course it has taken time, but now about 1/3 of the lawn is Zoysia. It is a very hardy grass and spreads via these little runners. Some of it is spreading over into my flowerbeds from the neighbor's yard. I'm thinking about transplanting it into our lawn. Just so you're aware, Zoysia turns yellow/brown in the winter and looks dead. Once spring comes it is the greenest most beautiful grass. PS--I don't know if the neighbor's Zoysia is Amazoy. He's moved now so I can't ask him.
  3. This is a hearty grass that will go dormant in the winter as most grasses do. I'm not sure if you can water it during the winter to keep it green as some grasses will do this. The reason this particular grass does so well is because it grows sideways and not straight up. The plugs will take time to establish themselves in your yard, and you have to water quite often to get them started. I would check out a sod company and see if they have this variety. I have bermuda in my back yard and St. Augustine everywhere else. These are also good grasses that can easily be taken care of if you take the time.
