- i would recommend reading the back of the strawberry packages. i think they do best when planted after frost usually early May.
- Your best bet is to set out plants, not start from seeds.
- The vast majority of strawberries are NOT grown from seed but from starts. All strawberries are vines. There are many different varieties of strawberries divided into two groups : Ever-bearing and Non Ever-bearing. Non Ever-bearing have fruit once a year, just before or just after Memorial day, May 30. Ever-bearing have fruit through the summer blooming 3 to 4 times a year. Non EB tend to have bigger sweeter fruit. The plants are replaced every 5 years by the growers; so the serious growers have 6 sections to their fields. The 6th section is for killing off parasites and being fallow one year to get better yields the other 5. Strawberries love Oregon coast climate on the West coast, and Delaware seashore climate on the East coast. Try a book on Hydroponics -- growing plants in water-nutrient w/o any soil. Strawberries do well with this and there's no nematodes / parasites left in the soil to wipe out each 6 yrs. Try Red Chief on the East Coast. They're big sweet and bloom /yield early... early means more money for the grower.
