when is the best time to plant a garden in Michigan?

Hello all...We just bought a new house the end of last summer and i so have spring fever to till up a spot and plant a garden...i am wondering when is the best time to plant a garden here in Michigan...when should i start germinating my seeds???

  1. Check out to see what zone you are in. Usually the North is 3 or 4 and the planting dates are after the last frost. I live in Montana and it may be later here than where you are. It is usually the end of May for tomatoes. Potatoes are earlier what is the tradition.... Good Friday? You could start to grow things inside now though.

  3. Your local garden center should be able to help you count back days from planting to germination and then planting outdoors. Much will depend upon what and where you are planting. My tomatoes will be in pots with a grow light March 15th. For southeastern Michigan, zone 5 (my area) most of se michigan is zone 6. I'm able to plant peas outside april first and usually have good results without any protection. (ground must be thawed) but other plants need to wait here until around Mothers Day. Not sure where you're at.
