  1. For most seeds that should be ok. If you are planting a veggie garden and have pumpkin or melon or squash seeds they like a small mound with more than 1 but less than 5 seeds in each mound.
  2. It is not necessary. The main reason is that the top three inches of soil is generally the best, and by building a mound you effectively double the amount of topsoil. The mound also clearly marks where you should walk to avoid compacting the soil. Raising the soil improves drainage- heavy rains can drown vegetable plants. In a dryland climate the rows can be perpendicular to the direction that water flows. The rows act as a dam, slowing the water and giving it time to sink in. Some of the best gardens don't use mounds, because the topsoil is very deep and they want to use every inch of space.
  3. it depends what youre planting, some plants dont like to sit in water and will rot. rows help you to be able to weed youre garden, to wic wateraway or to get water to the roots of youre plants, it is all how you want it. Vine plants, i usually mound, whyle beans or lettuce i put in a row, doesnt really matter as long as you can get to the plants and they dont sit in water.
