Help with organic gardening?

'm really interested in growing organic vegetables and herbs but im not really sure where to start. I don't want to plant in the ground of my backyard, I'd rather have a large rectangular type holder above ground. The only thing is is that I don't really know if the potting soil you buy at the store is truly organic. Also, I am unsure of where i can buy quality seeds. Its not practical for me to buy them online. I'm looking to plant a variety of vegetables and herbs. I forgot to mention i have 4 dogs... if that make any difference.

  1. The four dogs will make a difference if they get in the raised bed and dig up your plants. There are several brands of potting soil available at nurseries that say they are organic, but who knows many things are labeled organic when they are not. You may want to go to GardenWeb Forum and look at their site for raised bed gardening and organic gardening.
  2. You should go to these gardening sites and ask a lot of questions. There is a lot to learn about this, far more than the scope of this forum. http://www.localharvest.org/forum/ http://idigmygarden.com/forums/index.php (this one is the best) http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/organic/ You want to do raised bed gardening and you will have problems with your dogs digging in your raised beds. I have been gardening with dogs for most of my life. The best thing to do long term is train the dogs to stay out of the garden. I realize this does not work for a lot of people and they have to put up fencing to keep the dogs (and other critters like rabbits) out of their gardens in order to be able to raise anything
