How do I know how much seed I need?

When looking at seed catalogs, how do I know if I need 1 ounce vs a packet or 2 for how much area I have to plant?

  1. Every seed catalog I have ever looked at gives coverage information.
  2. All Major seed Companies will tell you how many seeds either per package or how many per ounce or grams etch, and should tell how many feet, say a certain amount of feet that carrot or leaf lettuce, or radishes will plant. To find out more go to your state agricultural universities websites for advice. They will all appear on a website if you type in the stat and horticulture,
  3. A lot depends on what the seed is. Carrot seeds are small, with quite a few making an ounce. Some seeds are larger (and easier to spread out when you plant them) so fewer to the ounce. How many seeds would depend on how many plants you want. Some plant the seeds too close and then thin the small plants when they come up. Great with beets. You can thin them and have beet greens. You didn;t say if you were growing vegetables or flowers. At a garden store (or grain store) you could ask a salesman, or feel the packages.
  4. normally if you want to plant in the polybag what you need is 2 seeds/polybag but for vegetables you have to mix with sand for easy distribution.
