What exactly is an unrooted cutting?

I'm shopping for Mexican Heather online and see this frequently. Typically I buy small plants from the local garden store or grocery. And of course everyone has heard of starting plants from seed. But please explain what exactly is an unrooted cutting and how would I use it to grow a full plant? Thankyou

  1. I guess it means a fresh cutting (a bit chopped off a plant) that has not yet grown roots to fill the pot. Leave it in the pot until it does.
  2. Chez is on the right track. Unrooted cutting is a piece of plant. It's up to you to root it either by placing in water or using rooting hormone on the cut end and placing it in moist potting soil.
