Can I grow papyrus plants in the same tub of water with lotus plants?

I am trying to decide how to set up a large tub of water for a water garden and what to plant in it that is companionable.

  1. Of course you can. Lotus prefer water that does not move, so place them away from a waterfall or fountain. Place the Papyrus so the top of the pot is about 1" below the surface of the water.
  2. Unless your tub holds hundreds of gallons, no you can't. One dwarf papyrus, unless it is divided regularly, will fill a 50-gallon tub in a couple of years. They also spread and grow from seeds and they are invasive in most areas. I have potted dwarf iris in my garden pool with some duckweed for shade.
