- you could order over internet or make your own. The easiest I found was at: http://www.gardeningwithkids.org/ca-hummingbirdfeeder.html There are lots of other ideas too. The food is just one part sugar and 4 parts water. It doesn't have to be exact. More water and they come back more often, more sugar and they can stock up, not coming back as much-but you'll still see them real often. Don't have to boil unless your water is unsterile or if you are going to store it and keep it awhile. Don't let it get too old in the feeder, it will ferment and make them sick. Just rinse with hot water and scrub with a brush. No soap-they don't like the taste or smell. If you have trouble with mold-soak in bleach then rinse very well, let it sit and dry out/air out real good. A perch on or near the feeder is great, they will light and you can watch them. I find it a thrill even to see them clean their tiny feathers! They do eat a few bugs. You can put a piece of fruit in a shallow jar-they will eat the fruit flies. Ants, wasps and pests, the position of the feeder is important. For ants, I just move it around and hang it high. Wasps have to get their head close to the nectar, so keep the holes pretty small and a inch or so away from the food. I had a clear feeder once and it hung up high. I could see them lapping with their tongues. It is not true they suck like their tongue is a straw. Good luck. Live well and do good.
