Ideads for a drained garden pond with a water feature in it?

I still want to attract wildlife but don't want the danger for my grandchildren so need some ideas for materials/a few plants & the design please.

  1. I have some ideas, but I have to go to work at this moment. I will re-post as soon as I get home. One thing that comes to mind is Monkey Grass around the border. :-)
  2. make it into a bog garden
  3. Check out this article I wrote about how to build a bog garden: http://www.pondlady.com/Articles/bog_garden.html
  4. if the pond isn't too big, you can fill it with round rocks and water and feel good about the kids and the wildlife...... or..... cover the surface of the pond with a sturdy metal mesh type fence panel or two, like chain link fencing, with some heavy boulders on the outside edges..... I had only a small five ft wide pond when my grandies were little and the round rocks full to the top did the trick for me... the babies could still play in the water safely... they loved it.... I guess it was much like a pondless waterfall..... http://www.backyardliving.com/pondlesswaterfalls.htm
  5. Webby, Make the pond anyway you want it too look. The kids will not be small forever and they need to learn right from wrong. My grandparents had huge ponds that we kids would spend hours looking at and never once did we fall in or die. Might of been the fact that they told us there were electric eels and piranha in there that would kill us if we touched the water. This fact was greatly enforced when fish food was sprinkled on top and the feeding frenzy started. I used the same story on my kids and it works like a champ. Now go design the pond you want to enjoy and drink a beer to relax.
