A wild turtle moved into my frog pond and garden, what should I plant there to provide foreage?

I am very excited about the newest member to my frog pond and garden and would like to add plants that are edible for him/her. Also any advise about providing a shelter and protection is apreciated.

  1. That's really cool! A lot would depend on what kind of turtle it was, how large the pond is, and where you live. Fencing the area might be an idea. Turtles tend to wander in search of a mate (which is possibly how yours happened to arrive), and a fence will help keep him there, and more importantly will also protect the turtle from raccoons, dogs and other predators. For shelter, some large leafy plants can help, or a few clay pots turned on their sides can give the turtle a safe place to hide. Turtles can be pretty hard on plants - both eating them and crushing them when they swim or crawl on them. Water lettuce, hyacinths, fairy moss, and Elodea are good water plants if they grow in your area. Cat-tails and rushes around the edge of the pond help provide shelter as well.
