ARE GARDEN SNAKES HARMFUL TO OUR MINI WEENER DOGS?
WE HAVE 3 WEENER DOGS AND WE'VE SEEN SOME GARDEN SNAKES AROUND OUR PLANT... WE'RE WORRIED THAT THE DOGS MIGHT GET BITTEN BY THEM OR SOMETHING LIKE THAT. I JUST WANT TO KNOW A.S.A.P. PLEASE AND THANK YOU!

- If they're garden snakes then no they aren't poisonous. They might bite the dogs if the dogs try to kill them which can happen, but the bite won't be fatal.
- Garden snakes may not be venomous, but they can carry infection. So I would put up a close mesh fence around the area your dogs are in. Be safe.
- If they're just Gardner Snakes (Green/yellow/brown) they don't bite and most don't even have teeth. If one of your dogs is really small and a really big snake comes along I suppose it could plausibly eat a dog but that would be one for the evening news. Biggest I've seen around here (Great Lakes Region) is 4 or 5 feet long by a few inches around. Check your States DNR website for local populations of poisonous snakes. They should have pictures.
- Garter snakes, or garden snakes, won't bother your dogs, unless your dogs actually catch one and bite the snake. Then the little snake might possibly be successful in biting back. But in reality, the snake will just move out of the way when it feels or hears the dogs coming, even if the dogs are tiny. Snakes don't want to have anything to do with dogs. Snakes are predators, and so are dogs. Different kinds of predators don't like being near each other, except humans who live with other predators like dogs and cats, but humans are strange that way! Garter snakes do kill prey to eat. The diet of a garter snake includes almost any creature that they are able to overpower and devour. These creatures mainly include: rodents, amphibians, snails, leeches, lizards, earthworms and certain birds. I would say that if the snakes you are seeing are more than an inch or so in diameter and more than three feet long, then you can worry. Less than that, I wouldn't worry.
