Will I be able to re-seed my Thai dragon peppers from the plants I grow?
I am planting a garden next year. In it, I will have Thai dragon peppers, Pumpkins, and other types of things. The question is whether I will be able to re plant a garden the following year from the seeds collected from the initial plants. The seeds are non treated, organic. I know that most commercial seeds are sterile, meaning that their offspring won't have viable seeds. Do pumpkin and pepper seed producers do this as well?

- If none of the current plants are hybrid varieties of the veggies, their seeds will produce the same veg. next year. But if they are hybrids, even organic hybrids, they won't be reliable in producing the same veg. next year.
- If you're growing Burpees Thai Dragon http://easybloom.com/plantlibrary/plant/hot-pepper-27 , it's a hybrid. Yes, you can try planting them, but the second generation peppers might not be the same as the initial batch.
- I have yet to find a reputable pepper farm that even bothers to go through the effort of creating sterile pepper seeds. There simply is no point, since most species seeds are available from any number of sources. In general, the smaller farms don't feel the need to dominate the market. They are mostly mom and pop type places who want to help spread some great stocks and maybe make a few bucks on the side. Occasionally, you'll find a place that even gives seeds away for free. Regal Peppers (www.regalpeppers.com) in St Augustine Florida, does that. Click the link, send your name and address, and they'll have seeds to you the next shipping day, for the price of the postage. Peppers will cross pollinate with other peppers unless you keep them separated either with distance or some "mechanical means like cheese cloth. And by distance, it is generally accepted that peppers can cross pollinate if they are within a mile of each other!! Totally unrealistic for most home gardens. But, even though they cross, the seeds should still be viable, just maybe not as pure a strain anymore. Good Luck.
