Can I save the seeds?

So I bought some vegetable plants this past spring for the garden. I like some of them saved the seeds from some tomatoes and peppers. Can I grow these seeds next year? I saw someone say that a lot of these new hybrids and such are only good once? And that it was only the heirlooms that you could do that with. I don't remember the kind I got now.

  1. You can try but chances are the fruit you get won't be like the fruit you ate. Might be better to order some new seeds before wasting garden space and time with no reward. It goes back to what you had originally.
  2. I'd give it a shot. You never know what you'll come out with. I'd only plant a few seeds and allow one final sprout/seedling to grow though in case they don't come out right. Give it a go, but only for the sake of curiousity and experimentation. If you still buy and grow the store-bought seeds you won't be caught out in the case of your second-generation seeds producing non-fruiting or 'dud' plants. Good luck :D
