cooktop vs range? which one is better and why?

I see a lot of catalogues have cooktops shown on them. I wanna make a new kitchen with new countertops. Can someone suggest what should I get and why?

1. stick with the old type...the new ones get a scratch they no longer work properly...
2. It sounds good to me, just stay from the glasstop. They sure look nice and are easy to clean. The problems are many.You cannot use cast iron or any pan thar does not lay totally flat. If it you crack it, a factory or extended warrenty does not cover the repair.
3. Whatever you choose, go with gas or the magnetic cook tops! This way you can control the heat. Have fun designing your new kitchen, I did mine last year!
