When planting flower seeds, do I have to take out the garden's soil and add new?

or leave the soil but mix in new?

  1. Just plant them in the existing soil and add some compost or topsoil for fertility.
  2. It will depend on what your native soil is like. We have clay soil where I live and have to mix in about 50% topsoil/compost mix to get anything to grow. If your soil is soft and easily broken up and it looks like small roots can move thru, you're OK. Otherwise, mixing in amendments will be necessary.
