Recently started seeds for garden, after germination and sprouting, a light blue green fungus?

I started the seeds for my garden in Ferry Morse Organic Seed Starter Mix. After they have sprouted, gotten about 1 or 2 inches tall, there is a light blue green fungus that appears on the roots. What is this and how do I prevent this from happening?

  1. It's a fungus, usually caused by overwatering. Cut back, unless it's destroyed the stem. In that case, start over.
  2. Most likely botrytis mold, which is caused by cool, humid, stagnant air. Prevention is easier than cure...brighter light, good air circulation, and let the soil dry a bit between waterings. If you start over, use new soil mix and trays if you can, to prevent contaminating the new crop. Good luck!
