What fruits and veggies can I plant in my garden that Japanese Beetles wont destroy?

Is there anything that they DON"T eat?

  1. lol. Sometimes it seems that way. They do have "favorites", though...and also some plants that they don't care for as much. They hardly ever eat evergreen shrubs and trees. Some of their favorites are trees in the prunus family (cherries and plums - ornamental or not), roses, japanese maples... They generally will not kill a healthy shrub or tree, just make them look awful. If you have some favorite plants, that also seem to be THEIR favorite as well, try spraying them with an insecticidal soap that contains NEEM oil. It will not kill them, but it's been found that they apparently don't like the taste of it. Spray your favorite plants either just before they show up, if you know when that is, or as soon as you see the first one show it's voracious maw...then spray weekly until they're gone.
  2. My wife is japanese and she doesn't like onions and tomatoes, try those out.
  3. Supposedly (and I have not tried this) planting Tansy in your garden will discourage them, and other pests as well, from eating the surrounding vegetation. Tansy is poisonous though if consumed in big enough quantities, and can irritate some people's skin just by touching it, so you'd have to decide if it was worth it.
