Is it to late in the Spring to plant a Vegetable Garden "Seeds" - or is it best to buy "Baby Vegetable Plants?

since it is so late into Spring now?? I really love starting a Vegetable Garden from scratch --> From Seeds. To me, it's like (cheating) when some people start their Vegetable Gardens from Tiny Baby Veggy Plants. They're not really starting from scratch. Just my opinion : - ) But anyways, again it's Not to late to start my Vegetable Garden from 'Seeds' right?? Helpful hint: I live in San Jose, California and it does stay quite Warm all the way as far as *Mid-September*....if that helps you folks to help me Answer (this question.) Thanks Kimberly B ?? Hummm. That's true, huh? I Don't want to have to wait until August to have my first home grown Tomatoes.

  1. Hi SteverZ, San Jose is not too far from Los Angeles, where I live. The mild climate I have allows seed planting right about now. I plan on planting corn this month for a July or August harvest. I've also had good luck with pole beans and zucchini. If you plant zucchini, don't grow more than two plants unless you want zukes by the dozen. Go ahead, give it a try.
  2. It's not to late, but if you plant seed your not going to get much out of it until about the beginning of august.
  3. If you really want high quality organic tomatoes in this season than you better go with baby plants..
  4. WELL IF YOU TENT THE PLANTS AT NIGHT TO KEEP THEM WARM AND ALSO IF THE DAYS ARE COOL KEEP THEM TENTED ...BUT REMOVE ON THE WARM DAYS AS YOU DO NOT WANT TO FRY THEM THAT WILL SPEED THEM ALONG. OOps sorry for caps. Then make sure they have good composting tea and plenty of water but not to much. Get seed for something that is a early producer....Like "Early Girl" for Tomatoes...Also remember the little plants you buy were started from seed just not buy you...Just next year start earlier indoor. Also one thing I did in an eastern/north zone when frost was coming to prolong my tomato season was to pull my tomato plants up by the roots and carry them to my basement and hang them on a clothes line upside down and mist them everyday. I would have vine ripened tomatoes as late as New Years Day. They tasted much better then picking them green and letting them ripen that way. Just a thought for tomatoes still on the vine when the cold weather comes along. Just plant and see what grows. Its not to late and when the cold weather starts coming if frost comes by surprise get out before dawn and spray everything with frost with water before the sun hits it and you can save most of it. If there is a frost warning cover with newspapers and anchor with stones so the paper doesn't fly away. Its is invigorating and good for the soul to grow food and work in the soil. This year I am growing roots plants like celery root and parsnips.... Good luck and enjoy!.
