Best tomatoes for 2009?
I'm looking at my Johnny's seed catalog, and just drooling! Decisions, decisions. What *are* the best tomatoes for 2009? I live in a northern climate, but I've got a greenhouse, so a long growing time is OK. I did try Brandywine once, but it cracked a lot in the greenhouse, and I didn't find the taste super -- it was tasty, but not super. Looking forward to your recommendations!

- for me --nothing beats a nice juicy Beefsteak Tomato
- An older variety that is still hard to match for flavor is Delicious. Very large, held the world record at one time. But it is the taste that makes it great. Brandywine and many other Heirlooms do tend to crack more than newer varieties. Early Girl is still one of my favorites for early smaller tomatoes. Oxheart, a large pink tomato is excellent for a mild less acid fruit. Another small to med. with outstanding flavor is Gurney Girl, only from Gurney's Seed and Nursery though.
- I am the one with 65 acres and had a 15 acre farm before here. My best and all time favorites are jet-star and morning-star tomatoes. The jet start have always been hearty and vibrant, with no cracking. Also I have had the best luck with harvesting my own seeds from both of these varieties. The morning star I use more for immediate eating. Such as salads, sliced with dinner, and on foccacia. I also enjoy, as a hobby, heirloom tomatoes. I grow a huge variety of heirloom vegetables and love the visual stimulation of the beauty of the colors and smells of them. They make wonderful gift baskets. And they also taste great!!! My neighbors love when I bring a basket of the heirlooms garnished with tied ribbons of fresh herbs. And also while I am here I wanted to say thank you for your informative response to my question and would love any information you may have on how to start or operate a community garden.I wish you the best of luck and love that there is another garden lover in the sea of technology.
- I am in Virginia, but some of the best that I have grown are :Black Krim, Ponderosa Pink, Brandyboy, Sunsugar(you will eat these like candy!), Cherokee Purple. I will grow these this year too. As for cracking- I have found that if you moderate the amount of water this seems to limit that problem. I use black plastic with soaker hoses beneath. Also I would suggest a soil test- you may find that your pH needs adjusting;calcium sometime helps with issues involving the cells.
