My seeds have germinated, but it's still another 4.5 weeks till the last hard frost when I can put them out!!?

What do I do with my plants that have already germinated really well?? My cucumbers, watermelon, tomatoes, eggplant, cantalope, ect.... have already germinated to a nice size and I'm worried they'll get too big before it's time to put them out after the last hard frost (here in KS apx. April 17th). If I put them in the basement for cooler temps and less sun (well, no sun..) will they die? I thought this would make them grow a bit slower. I bought seeds from Johnnhy's seed catalog and put them in a sunny south facing window on the 2nd floor and they just took off really fast!

  1. you could try that make sure that get enough light to stay alive.it is way too early to put out side unless you want to put up a temporary greenhouse for them
  2. 4.5 weeks is a long time. I would suggest putting them in larger containers. You can also set them outside on nicer days so they will be hardy when you can finally place them in the garden. Strange how the last "actual" frost is always after the predicted time.
  3. do NOT put them in the basement!!... what is a 'nice size'?.... how many sets of true leaves do they have?.... these are plants that have attained a good size and are being hardened off before being planted in the ground..... http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_olWb1fGRYKE/SBEq0D_dnsI/AAAAAAAAAX0/TnS4FDdWptE/s400/P4240010.JPG bigger pots is your best bet....
