I just got a vegetable seed catalog and am wondering?
Why we dont see more varieties of certain vegetables available in the market. This catolog has got 100s of amazing varieties of corn, brussel sprouts, peas, cauliflower, etc. I had no idea these things even existed. Any idea why we dont see more of them? I am going to try to grow some of my own, but my green thumb is actually a little on the yellow side.

- Vegetables in supermarkets are based upon seeds that are hardy and known to grow well... which sometimes sacrafice some flavor to make the plant hardy and fast growing. I say go for growing your own. One mistake people make is overwatering. If the soil looks damp, don't water.
- The varieties in stores are selected for their keeping qualities and ability to be shipped. Many have been genetically altered to enhance these properties. Also many people will not buy vegetables in unfamiliar colors or shapes. The varieties in stores do not produce any more per plant than some of your heirloom vegetables.
- You go girl!! Get some dirt under your fingernails. Funny thing is, as a kid working in the garden was almost like punishment. Now I can't wait for the ground to warm up so I can get out in it. Try all those amazing varities of veggies. There's the added bonus that you will know exactly what (if anything [go organic if you can]) has been sprayed onto the plants. There is something almost religiously fulfilling about eating foods that you have grown yourself.
