Common garden plants in a koi pond?

Trying to combat string algae and just added parrots feather. While shopping around for aquatic plants that my koi fish won't eat, I was wondering if the common garden plants will do the job and are safe for the fish. I've had good experience with Elephant ear and Umbrella plant. Any other experience out there? Thanks!

  1. This website goes over specific plant species and discusses whether or not the koi will mess with it: http://www.wernersponds.com/koiandplants.html Umbrella plant is listed as being extremely koi resistant. There are lots of plants that are already guaranteed to work in ponds. They sell them at many local fish stores and garden centers, but if you can't find any locally, you can always look online. Here are some pond plants that will do great in your pond: http://www.aquabid.com/cgi-bin/auction/auction.cgi?liveplantsp http://www.pond-o-mania.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWCATS&Category=34 http://www.pondplants.com/ According to the website http://www.rockymountainkoi.com/koi_pond_plants.htm , plants are very important for koi to prevent sunburn.
  2. If you mean common houseplants, I'd avoid it. The koi would probably be fine, but the plants would almost certainly die.
