  1. herbaceous dycot stems don't get angry...they get pithed!!! Sorry, it was a joke I made up in botony class in college, our professor actually put it on the final exam!!
  2. Listen to me when I tell you this. A rock garden is about tranquility. Your tranquility. Stop trying to find out what any one else thinks, close your eyes, open your mind and fell your inner tranquil place. When you can do that you will know what design to use.
  3. Succulents, like hen and chicks can make a rock garden look really great. Use a variety of rock sizes and shapes. Make a bunch of rocks close together and then put small amounts of cactus and succulent soil from Lowe's in between the rocks. Plant wild violets, hen and chicks, everliving succulents and mint in between the rocks. As they grow, you will know which ones to move to which places. Plant taller plants like mint toward the back. Another nice plant is pachysandra. It stays green all winter. I have some petrified wood I use in my rock garden. I like to place it upright in a short pot. It looks kinda like wood growing. Use a tree stump in your garden. You can even hollow it and plant some hen and chicks inside. Don't be afraid to add some color with colored glass bottles or a few artificial flowers. Just be sure to empty the bottles after rain. You can even use some green patio carpet under your rocks to look grassy. Give your garden several levels. Have fun!

  5. One thing I've always wanted to do is a woodland rock garden- think the forested, rocky slopes of the Blue Ridge Mountains, weathered, lichen-covered granite boulders, overhung by massive, tree-like rhododendrons and mountain laurel, with ferns and woodland wildflowers (bleeding heart, dutchman's breeches, Virginia bluebells, wood aster, etc.) growing in the rich deep decomposed leaf litter that's worked its way between the rocks... A successful rock garden is one that keeps in mind the place of inspiration, whether it's the desert Southwest, the high Rockies, the orchid-festooned, sunwashed cliffs in the Carribbean or the lush tropical ravines of Hawaii....
