- Try mesenbryanthemum,(Livingstone Daisy).Bright colours, low growing, relish full sun and require little watering.Buy mature plants from garden stores,or easy to grow from seed.-and seeing where you live, how about Californian poppies!
- Madagascar Periwinkle <Vinca> or Lantana both like hot, dry conditions. They should do well in the area which you have described. Lantana photo and info: http://www.floridata.com/ref/L/lant_c.cfm Vinca info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rosy_Periwinkle
- Google drought resistant plants. Although I dont know about survival in a planter as plants in planters do need to be watered more often.
- Most cacti and succulents grow well in these conditions.
- Check out any of the many types of Sedums. There are some that creep along the ground and those that are 24-30" in height. They also do well in planters.
