What are good flowering plants for a medium to low light garden?

I live in Northern Virginia (zone 6) and am planning out my garden for the year. I'm looking for a good mixture of suitable flowering plants for a garden that only has direct sunlight for 2-3 hours a day. I'm willing to change out plants through the growing season, though I would like some perennials.

  1. Order a catalog on line for free for your flowers, plants, etc. You will find not only pictures but care guides, zones, planting instructions, size of plants and perennials and/or annuals. Check local gardening centers, they have purchased plants for your area but don't buy cheap plants. Plan a garden for your property - not for the year. Take time to measure off distances. I use graph paper, colored pencils and coins to get ideas of what sizes and colors I am looking for. You will be looking down on your property. Keep bushes four feet from buildings. And remember they will grow and fill in. Good luck.
  2. Try plants like Chrysanthemums,Dahlia,Hydrangeas,Camellias,Azaleas,Cobra Plants,Agapanthus,Impatience,Saliva,Hemerocallis,Fresia.orchids,....which all do grow well in poor lighting conditions too.
  3. Bleeding heart, pulmonaria, astilbe You can play with the link below putting in bloom color, height. I planned out my garden, put in a few perenials and filled in with annuals. I've added more perennials over time with interesting foliage and moved things around. Have fun!
