When it comes to pots and pans, does name brand really matter? When it comes to quality?

I am not a professional cook, but I am wanting to stock my kitchen with very useful, long-lasting items. But what are really good pots and pans. I saw some in a catalog called Chef's Mark? Are those any good? If not could you suggest some?

  1. If you intend to cook for your family and friends then I would suggest to buy the best that you can when it comes to pots, you don't need to buy a whole set all at once because good pots are very expensive to buy , you could get a couple at the time if you like , most of the good pots are open stock , keep in mind that the weight of the pot is important as well I love the thick base on mine , it will give you a better results and the heat is distributed equally, I have some from Lagostina and I like them very much . Look for the copper bottom ones . http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000I0UJO4/103-8015607-8268654?ie=UTF8&ref%5F=sr%5F1%5F12&qid=1222533849&mqnodeid=398096011&searsBrand=core&lang=en http://www.sears.ca/gp/product/B000HTUUEK/103-8015607-8268654?ie=UTF8&ref%5F=sr%5F1%5F11&qid=1222533849&mqnodeid=398096011&searsBrand=core&lang=en
  2. I have Tramontina stainless pots and pans and love them. High quality 18/10 stainless and come with lids. Some are solid stainless lids and some are glass. They have a website you can check out. I paid less than the "name brands" and got premium pots and pans.
