Is it too early to start planning this years garden?
The Michigan Bulb catalog just arrived...I'm so excited! Wisconsin, Zone 5, we've got a long way to go! Don't worry Jenny! I'd have to dig through an awful lot of snow! It's just so nice to dream....

- Haha! No it's never too early to start planning!
- Reenie - we're almost neighbors! Never too early to start planning a garden.
- You sound like my husband. We got the seed catalogs about 2 weeks ago and he's already making lists. I'm in Zone 5 too (Indiana), and he wants to plant every square inch of our land (only about .4 acres) with tomatoes, peppers, you name it. I stick to the flowers, like you, though. But it's a great thing to do when you look outside like I'm doing right now and see over a foot of snow on the ground!
- Nope! Not at all too early to start planning, buy a whole bunch of seeds, get gardening magazines and START PLANNING NOW! ^^
- When I lived in Massachusetts I started planning in February. I used to make out my list. I bought a lot of lillies that you buy 5 and get 5 free. When you live in a cold climate it is something to look forward to. Happy planting.
- For a true gardener, there's no such thing as too early or too late to plan a garden!
- Plan it, go ahead gal, Do not plant it, I repeat, do not plant it. LOL......Anxious for Spring, yes.
- It's never too early to start planning! I am zone 4 , Wisconsin, and have this year's garden almost all plotted out on paper. My husband and I just put in a small orchard last year on our 3/4 acre and have to plan early to make all the changes that will come this year! If you plan on ordering from any seed catalog (we order from Gurney's and a local nursery on the cheap) be sure to go online and check out coupon sites to get good deals! I like "retailmenot", but just google your preferred catalog name followed by "coupon" and a bunch of great sites come up, just watch expiration dates!!! "Retailmenot" actually links you to the desired site and your coupon is automatically in there at the end of your order when you pay! Easy! AND if there is a local nursery near you, call and ask if you can get trees or shrubs "bare-root". It saves them money and labor not potting them up and you get a great deal, usually!!! Good Luck & happy gardening!!! Also, ask around for friends that may want to have a "plant swap". We did this last year in our neighborhood and invited friends and ended up with tomato plants, pepper plants (that someone had started from seed successfully), onion sets, any a bunch of hostas and lillies. All free from trading some of our unneeded plants! It was a blast!
- Its never too early ... I love my Jackson & Perkins, Burpee & Spring Hill Catalogs too! I like to play who can tempt me into buying them first? What is my opening beauty bid?
- Never too early to plan way too early to plant.I have multiple things going this year all will take time work and patience and yes got the planning stage going too! Can't wait for planting time. Now is the best time to walk your yard over to get the best location for your new plantings and follow the sun that way you get the best site.Good luck with your projects!
- I remember getting my seed and bulb catalogs in New England, how they made February bearable. Out on my porch, my tomatoes are ripening, though I had to bring them in last night! A freeze in Florida is scarcer than hair on a gecko!
- I'm planning,even though I can't plant until May.
- Oh, go ahead and plan! I start planning in the fall, as soon as I plant my winter crops. First though, decide on your priorities. Lists are good, they remind us what we were thinking. Get a soil test for the area involved. Even though you may need to wait, you will know what you need. Get out your colors and paper and draw your garden. Get some books, put your plants in the right place to start with, regarding light and exposure. Have fun, if you make a mistake, plants are portable! Landscape designer for years.
- No, not at all. We're in zone 3. We started planning our 2 acre garden back in December. Already bought all of our seeds and will be getting the heating mats and starting trays out real soon! Can wait for fresh, organic produce!!!
