Need Ideas for for plants for a friends garden?
I'm helping a friend do up her garden, she lives in a terraced house so garden is 16ft by 30ft. I'm putting a small patio area at the bottom of the garden that gets most of the light but I need ideas for alpines for the left of the garden that gets no direct sunshine and some more brighter flowering plants for the right that gets some light, Any ideas please

- Need to know the weather and climate, soil available, altitude... those types of factors. Plants are very particular where they grow best.
- Alpines won't necessarily flourish in a lack of sunlight - they want thin soil and can survive harsh weather but are often sun lovers. For shade plants have a look here: http://www.plantsforshade.co.uk/index.html Flowers for the sunnier border - there are so many - do you have a colour theme in mind? How about ease of care? Maybe going for annuals that change twice a year for the main seasons underplanted with bulbs might suit your friend rather than a garden that will need much tending? Annuals are often the showiest flowers too. Or how about some grasses? They are easy care, beautiful and have year round interest.
- For the shaded area why not try some Hostas and possibly Fushias(depending on how much shade) and for the sun use some annuals in pots, Petunias and Geraniums should do well there(some great colours available to mix and contrast) and they don't need a great deal of watering.
- lavender shade side, peony sun side.
- Grow rosemaries or oriental poppies on the sunny side; they're very easy to grow and take care of, perfect for beginner gardeners or people who don't have much time to look after their garden. As for the shady side, I recommend peony and Bleeding Heart.
- For colour try Geraniums, Allison, Red hot Pokers, pansies and orchards For the unusual try growing an onion bulb, Ginger bulb various weeds that are attractive For Green and fragrance, Lemon Geranium, Rue, Fennel. For contrast, Curry plant, Lavender, Sage ATB Red
