The soil is pretty good I'd say...not too dry or hard. How do I start a flower garden? I'm interested in some periennials and some annuals...can those be grown together?

Any suggestions??? Thanks!

Just finished digging a 10' diameter flower garden (Dianthus varities) in our front yard. Uncertain what the Just finished digging a 10' diameter flower garden (Dianthus varities) in our front yard. Uncertain what the next step should be. Yep, this is a first for me. The soil appears to be in really good shape and removed all weeds and roots. Should I cover the bed with plastic and cut holes then plant the flowers? If so, after the flowers are planted, should I put something (bark perhaps?) on top of the plastic? Will the plastic provide too much moisture and destroy the roots of this particular flower? Do I need to mix potting soil with the dirt in my bed? Again, this is my first flower bed and I need instruction. Do you know anything about this particualr kind of flower? Your responses will be deeply appreciated. P.S. I dont want to spend a fortune on upkeep. I live in central Kentucky. Thank you.

I am planting a flower garden from seed in Yucca Valley CA, what flowers grow best in that desert area? I am moving to Yucca Valley in Jan(from Ohio) and want to be prepared to plant the seeds in early spring. I want flowers that will grow in the natural desert soil without adding topsoil and ones that wont need much watering after they are established. I have a lot of area to work with so I want to do areas with wildflowers and also regular flowers. Ive been doing tons of searches but surprisingly enough cannot find any one book or source for desert flowers, so am trying to figure it out by searching : arid soil, sandy soil, zone 9, full sun etc and then trying to pick out ones common to all the lists. Unfortunately, while I have found a lsome useful information about wild flowers, I've found very little on *regular* flowers.. So if anyone has experience with flower gardening in the Mojave/desert any help would be appreciated. Thanks so much . Mykiel

My flower garden has gotten out of control. Weeds and grass have taken over.? Grass in the yard got very tall due to my illness has prevented me from trimming and weeding. The grass in the yard went to seed and all the seeds fell in my garden and that has caused grass to grow in my flowers. I have many wonderful plants and don't want to damage them by digging them up. Also, because of the plants, I can't spray with a grass and weed killer. Another problem, there are fireant hills in many areas of the flower beds...please help with ideas.
Has anyone used Instant Flower Garden? I'm wanting to spruce up the yard of the house we are renting. I don't want to spend a ton of money on perrenials and annuals that have already grown, so I started with one ring around a tree in the yard with just seeds and it's working great. Problem is- I live out in the middle of nowhere and can't find any seeds anymore, everyone's sold out of just about everything except herbs. So I was wondering if anyone here has every used Instant Flower Garden, and what were their experiences with it?
How to revive an old flower garden (when you have a black thumb)? We moved into an older home last summer that was owned by an elderly lady who passed away. She had a beautiful garden on the side of the house with all kinds of perenials--daylilies, irises, daffodils, tulips, daisies, etc. We were too busy with the house to do anything with it then, but now things are coming up, and we'd like to bring it back to it's former glory. Trouble is, it's overrun with weeds, and we can't tell what's coming up at this point. How do we clean this garden up if we can't tell what's weeds and what's good stuff? Any advice would be really appreciated, thanks!
How should I start my flower garden? Hey folks! Today I am off to buy some plants to brighten up the front of our home. We have a large yard, but the front of our house is BORING. White house, white stairs... green grass. That's it. I will want a 12" deep strip of COLOUR against the front foundation of the house, and along one side that catches the sun. What plants to do suggest that are EASY to care for, don't require a ton of watering, like the sun but can handle some shade, and are cheap? I'm not looking to have an award winnnig garden, just something to liven up the front of our house! I really like hostas, I may plant some of them on the side of the house... I was thinking about pansies or something easy for the front of the house... I am 7 months pregnant, and won't have a ton of time or energy for garden upkeep other than the basic weeding and watering... Thank you for your time!!
What kind of mulch should I use in my flower garden? I live in an area that is prone to black widow spiders. My MIL says I need to stay away from the bark mulches because black widows tend to like hanging out in damp, woody places. I want to know if putting bark mulch in my garden would attract black widows, and if so, what other mulches could I use instead.
