What plants would be good for my garden pond? I have a 200 gallon garden pond in my back yard that has a small waterfall and four koi in it. It gets some sun in the morning but not a considerable amount. I have one small pot of arrow arum (or something very similar to it) but I would really like to have a couple other plants in my pond. I live in zone 7...HELP :)
What common garden plants can be used in an ornamental fish pond? I've discovered that Creeping Jenny and Peppermint do well in my pond. Aquatic plants (like Arum, water hyacinth, etc.) are so very expensive I'd like to find other "regular" plants that will do well grown in water. Any one had success with other common plants?
Common garden plants in a koi pond? Trying to combat string algae and just added parrots feather. While shopping around for aquatic plants that my koi fish won't eat, I was wondering if the common garden plants will do the job and are safe for the fish. I've had good experience with Elephant ear and Umbrella plant. Any other experience out there? Thanks!

How to get rid of frogs in garden pond? They are terrorizing whole neighborhood with their ribbiting and croaking in our garden pond (which is pretty big, radded and grown by miscelaneous plants). But they are clever enough to hide and be quiet and unfindable when anybody tries to seek and catch them. Anyone has any experience? OK, I guess I have both toads and frogs... Maybe they are great for enviroment, but people already complained some years ago about them, because they were so loud they couldn't sleep. Its just really annoying, Its like living in zoo sometimes
Whats the best way to change your garden pond from pea soup? the water in my garden pond is very green? Is this due to algae? There is a little algae floating on the surface of the pond, but the water itself is seems pretty clear (a clear green colour) - no tiny particles of green in suspension in it. What can I do about it? I have a couple of areating plants in the pond and a few snails and frogs.
How to build a Garden Pond to house Comets? Hello, i have decided to build a garden pond in my back yard because my comets were getting too big for their tank, so I've already looked up some websites on the matter and i was just wondering aside from the construction, is there anything else i need to consider? What type of plants should i have? I might go away on holiday so will they be okay for a few weeks? Will they eat the plants? How often will I need to change or top up the water? Thanks in advance
How do I control, not necessarily prevent, birds from coming to my garden pond? Hi ther! So I've posted before re: garden ponds. At first it was murky water, then dead birds, and now... too many birds! I love nature, but the old addage "too much of a good thing" definitely applies to my pond. I don't mind birds seeking water, a quick bath, etc. (after all, that's the point, I know), but I seem to be getting TOO many visitors. Today I cam ehome to an abundance of bird excrement in, on and around the pond. Had to drain it again (gross), clean the stones and water in the stuff on the plants surrounding. Is there any thing to help "control" the feather friends, or should I just fill in the hole and give up? For health reasons, smell and ultimately just plain appearance, I can't have another day like today. Thanks for your suggestions!

Aside from rocks, and shutting it down, what can I do to make my garden pond safe for birds? I returned home from walking my dog today to carnage in my otherwise peaceful garden pond. There were two "floating" birds, and one shivering while holding on to the pump's electrical cord. Though obviously distraught, I was able to save the one who held on, however, had to bury his mates. That side, I've looked online, and aside from adding a rock and a water plant for any bathers to hold on to (and yes, from closing it down completely) what other suggestionos do you have? As a nature lover, I already feel terrible, so please no sarcasm. Serious answers only please! For now, the pond is drained and off. Before I open it up again for business, I want to do all that I can to avoid a repeat incident. Thank you kindly.

Garden gets so overgrown with weeds and stupid plants...? I am hopeless in the garden. My garden is about 20 metres by 15 metres and it used to be a bit of a wilderness garden, tall plants, a pond, fruit bushes, etc before it was mine. I don't have the money to do anything drastic to it any time soon, but it just gets so overgrown with weeds, long grasses, strange plants, etc. I have been doing a few hours digging up weeds and pulling them all out, but I know within weeks they'll all be back. I don't really want to use weed killer because there are fruit plants in my garden as there is in my next door neighbour's garden. Is there anything I can do stop weeds coming back so quickly and making the garden look a mess? Thanks for any advice.
Any tips on using produce to grow plants (esp. pond plants) in AZ? I live in central Arizona. I have a small garden, and will eventually have a small pond/water garden. I like growing things I can (at least theoretically) eat, and... well, I'm very frugal. So, I'm wondering if anyone has tips, success stories, or instructive failures for growing plants from grocery-store produce, seeds sold as food, or other things likely to be cheaper than little packets of seed-sold-as-seed. I'm particularly interested in taro (for the bog portion of my water garden), lotus (for the non-bog portion of my water garden), and sweet potato (probably for the bog, though if it'd grow in the pond...) I'm also interested in any advice on what grocery-sourced plants would tend to grow well in Arizona--hotter-than-<bleep> summers, dry air, alkaline soil, and, well, drought tolerance would be good, I don't always remember to water things as often as I should. If it helps, I have a large Asian market near my house, so I can get some items that might be "exotics" at a normal grocery store. I... actually don't know if I've seen watercress in stores around here. the lotus I'd be going for is, well, whatever they have at the Asian market. Probably whatever sort tends to be grown commercially.
Water Garden Plants, how to introduce? I was just given some water lilys and irises. I have no idea how to introduce them to an existing outside water area with decorative fish. Does anyone know if they need to be planted or can they be free floating? I only know that they are lilys and irises. Not the type or anything. The holding area the fish are in is not a pond yet. We are thinking of building one. The fish were left here. I have the plants in a bucket at the moment. Should I dump them in with the fish until I know what to do with them? May I ask.....what is sharp sand? And if the water area is deep enough and the plants are submerged using the planters will that kill them?
Setting up a water garden pond? My husband and I are looking into getting a water garden pond for our back yard just to grow water lillies no fish or anything. No we know we need to dig the hole and such and fill it but after we get it all filled should we leave it for a day or so for the water to come to outside temperature and then put plants in it? And are there any chemicals or anything you have to put in the water?
What kind of flowers are good for a small pond? We just installed a small pond. It is only 125gal. I would like to put some water lilies in but know some pond plants can be very invasaive. Also do you need to feed them or other water plants like you do garden flowers? What kind of plants do you suggest for around the pond and other plants in the pond?
I'm growing lotus plants in my garden. Will they remain in hibernation when I bring them indoors for winter? I presently have several lotus plants growing in 20-gal. tubs of water in my backyard. Last year, I carted all eight of them into my unheated garage for the winter months here in Michigan. Unfortunately, we had a cold snap that lasted about 3 weeks and all of the lotus plants froze to death--except two. It's not feasible to heat the interior of our attached garage, nor run 100-W heaters in all eight tubs of water. So this winter, I plan to bring the lotus plants that will not fit in the bottom of my small pond into our heated sunroom that's just off of the kitchen. My question is, will the lotuses remain in a hibernation state during this long time period indoors at a 68-70 degree temperature or do they even need to go into hibernation? Lotus plants in the Philippines or Thailand, for example, don't go into a hibernation phase...or do they?
garden pond pros and cons? Garden pond. Am considering creating a small garden pond with probably a small fountain. Main objective is to have some water (as a different texture from earth / wooden terrace, soothing sound), have some different plants, and to make garden more artistic / professional. Not too keen on having fish. Can those already having gardens enlighten me of their experiences : positive or negative in having a garden pond ? Thanks
I have an artificial pond( 1m X 1m X1m). which are the best species of plants, decoration fishes suitable? I have an artificial pond( 1m X 1m X1m) in my garden. I would like to have some decoration fishes and small plants in the pond. I heard that some fishes will reside in deep water while some others stay in the superficial areas. I would like to know some species which are butiful, needs little care( having more resistance power to changes in water and climate) and which will be visible on the upper water level. What are the important things i should take care of.
garden pond help please? can someone tell me why my pond fish (goldfish and a carp) have started to jump out the water.the pond is 8 feet by 6 feet by 3 feet deep ,i have 15 fish from 2" to 10".it is very clear water with plants, they jump a few inchs into the air ,so far they not jump to the side just straight up.
Can anyone recommend pond plants? I have a new pond in my garden. So far it has: • A filter with a fountain. • Oxygenating weed 'Elodea' So not a lot!! Can anyone recommend any other plants (or anything else at all!) for the pond? (We made the pond for all of the frogs in our garden - we have loads that breed in one of our flowerbeds, so we thought it might be nice to have a little pond for them all. We are thinking of getting a few fish at some point, so does anyone know some fish [that don't grow too big] that are suitable to keep with frogs/tadpoles? Thanks!)
How can I make my pond plants stay up? I recently dig a pond in my back garden, with a ledge around the side especially for the plants. I tried the plants for size and stability before I added the water and they were fine. However when I transported the water (from the old pond with no ledge to the new pond) the plants wouldn't stand up. The plants a quite tall, around 3 feet high some of them. I have tried balancing rocks on the plant pots under the water it didn't work. I also tried putting rocks in the bottom of the pots but this still didn't work, I think because of the weight and height of the plants. Unfortunately the ledge around the side isn't very wide, (only just wide enough for the plants) and neither is it as straight as I had originally thought or intended, but it is ALMOST Straight. What I'm asking is what can I do to make such tall plants stay standing up, without putting them in the middle of the pond at its deepest? Thanks in advance for all answers. Not sure if this makes a difference due to the health and safety code of pond life lol, but I do have fish, toads and a newt already in there, so answers which could hurt them wouldn't be so great, but thanks.
How do I get algae out of my garden pond? I have a small garden pond that is partly shaded. Last year it did great, and had no algae. This year it has only been running for about 3 weeks and the sides are all covered with green algae. Right now I only have one plant that is starting to plants its roots. The pond does have a waterfall. I need to know what I can do to kill the algae but not my plant. I will also be putting small goldfish in it at some point this summer. Can someone please help, my green pond is embarrasing? The algae is not stringy and the water is clear. I think I will just leave it and see what happens. I didn't even think about the cycle process. I have three fish tanks inside and my healthiest one has algae growing on the rocks. I guess my pond and tanks are basically the same in this sense
