Questions regarding Japanese rock garden/moss/rocks.? Dear readers, I am trying to make a japanese rock garden outside of my condominiums front door. there is a space about 8 feet wide and 20 feet long and that is the space I want to put the garden in. I was wondering if moss requires alot of water to grow, or if any, because I am not allowed to have water in that space. I was wondering if it required any water if I could spray it with water from a spray bottle or something. I also would appreciate if anybody can tell me some good stores to buy high quality sand, any low water required plants, moss, etc. anything for a rock garden. Please respond, and Thank You.

Starter plants and new shrubbery? We have been getting our planting done around the house and landscaping as the previous owners did not care for yard work. My question is this, I read on all of the tags in the flowers and shrubs that they need to be watered daily until they take. My brother in law once again is telling me I am wrong which he seems to enjoy doing. We have planted seeds in the garden as well as starter plants, we planted two hydrangeas a rhododendrun and two cherry trees in the back yard. There are also bedding plants in the back. We planted two small shrubs in the front a rhododendrun and a japanese split leaf maple. There are also three hanging baskets with petunias. Am I correct that these need to be watered everyday?
Need great ideas for a Japanese type garden? I have created a new area in my back yard and plan on putting a large Asian statue in the center of this area. I am working on an area behind where the statue will sit to plant bamboo in a controlled area. I am fixing a sort of tunnel and plan to put wisteria on it, to grow over the wire tunnel. I would like ideas on other plants to use in this area to enhance the statue and give an air or serenity. This will be a sort of *secret* garden, as you won't be able to see it all until you go through the tunnel. I have thought about some peonies, and plan to use white gravel and have black enamel benches in it. I would like to use reds mostly, to give more impact to the overall effect. I am in zone 6

How do I plant the seeds from a Japanese Pea Pod plant? My friend has a beautiful plant growing around her mailbox. She said it was a japanese pea pod plant. She picked several pods off that had some good size seeds inside, and told me that all I had to do was allow them to dry out and then plant them. Well, I am not even sure I know what she means by "drying them out". I know nothing when it comes to gardening and flowers. Any suggestions for me?
How can I keep the Japanese Beetles away from my plants? Every year my garden starts out beautifully, I get one or two good pickings of green beans. Next thing I know the japanese beetles have come to stay and destroy every plant. The same thing happens with my morning glories. I have used the chemical powder stuff before, it works o.k. but I do not want to add a bunch of chemicals to my gardens (vegetable, and flower) if I don't have to. I hate those Japanese Beetles it makes me feel like like all of my hard work is for nothing. PLEASE HELP ME. I want to solve the problem before it starts.
What plants would looks best in our garden? My husband and I purchased and apartment building in Oct. When we purchased the building, we noticed the problem with the building is that the landlord did nothing with it. There is a part of the property line (about 200 yards long) that is nothing but weeds. We will be taking out the weeds when the ground thaws. Afterwards, we wanted to make a simple yet elegant flower garden along the property line. The building is a large red brick. We will be accenting the building with white (we are replacing some porches this summer and using white vinyl columns due to our being located between a highway and road. This is also why we want this part of the property covered with something and we thought flowers would be nice with a fence instead of only a fence) Anyways I am interested in the Japanese red maple and the mount fiji flowering cherry. We are in zone 6. Any suggestions for trees/shrubs/plants/flowers we could use? (we were trying to use a red palet with pinks whites some purples and even 'black') Open to all suggestions (we would like to do this ourselves as my brother is a landscaper and able to assist if we need him. Please do not suggest us hire someone. This a project my husband and I would like to try together :)
japanese knotweed in the garden? don't groan, but bought house last year (south east UK) and noted some dry stubbly bamboo-type/reed stumps in the ground at the bottom of the garden - cut them away and in the last few weeks these beasties have sprouted up to about 3 metres - my friend popped round for a cuppa and was apoplectic when she saw them because apparently (I'm not a gardener) it is japanese knot-weed and not good (underestimation!)- the neighbour at the bottom of the garden has it all around his sheds too on the other side of the fence backing onto the area it is growing in my garden - how best to get rid without damaging the sapling trees I planted next to it? (before I realised what it was) -thanks - at the moment it is localised to where the neighbouring gardens converge at the end and not near any buildings/houses (other than sheds)
Why has my red japanese maple turned green? My crimson queen japanese maple has tuned from red to green,it is planted in a north facing garden so cant really be moved. Will it turn back to red in the autumn?
Hostas, coral bells, and japanese fern in shade garden. Only coral bells are coming back and looking healthy.? I'm wondering why my coral bells are doing well, but only 1 of the 2 hostas I had last year came back. The leaves (hosta) look like they've been eaten up and they've been getting really small. The japanese fern keeps coming back, but it doesn't look healthy. Only the coral bells are looking good. I really want healthy hostas. I see others with them, and I don't know why mine aren't. Help!?!? If hostas aren't good, what are some other plants I could plant in a really shady area. Thanks in advance, I really want to turn my brown thumb green!

I have started seeing the leaves of the tree turn all brown and brittle like they are dying. Some of the leaves have brown spots. Am i doing something wrong? What grows well / easy? - Large garden in Western NC? So I am looking at a property that is about 6 acres. I was thinking of buying it to make a personal botanical garden. It will be located in the Asheville, NC area (which is zone 7) I wanted suggestions on plants that are relatively hardy, perennial. Aesthetics is the big thing here, It has to be pretty. Are Japanese Maple trees safe to plant around plumbing? I have taken a bunch of saplings that were growing in my garden. I put them in a pot last year and they are growing nicely. I was thinking of planting one of them in my yard, but I have heard horror stories about roots damaging the pipes that run from the street to people's homes. And it is a costly repair. I do not want a tree that will grow too big. I also love weeping trees!!!!! Which one, if any, is a good and safe tree to plant in my yard? Thank you!!!
Picking a Japanese Cucumber? Two questions here. I have a Japanese cucumber plant and I have cucumber growing. This is my first time vegetable gardening, so I don't know when to harvest the veggies. The cucumber that is growing looks like a dill pickle. It is about 5 1/2 " long and just about an inch - inch 1/2 thick. It is a med-dark green color and the flower on the tip looks like it died today. I read online that this type of cucumber can grow very long (not too thick) so don't know when I should pick it. Should I pick it now that the flower died off? Also, my nearby zucchini plant has overtaken my garden box. I didn't know it would grow to the size it grew to, so I planted Japanese Eggplant across from it on the same day as the zucchini was planted. Now the zucchini are growing plentiful and large but the Japanese Eggplant is almost completely hidden underneath the plant and gets very little direct sunlight. It is producing eggplant but they are very small and thin, then they go to mush..... We can't even cook with these as they are too small. If we removed the skin we'd be out of veggie! :) I have read other people say they 'stake' their zucchini. If a zucchini plant is full grown is it too late to stake, or can my hubby still create a small 'fence' area to have the zucchini move away from the Japanese eggplant so it can get sunlight? If anyone knows anything about this I thank you in advance for any information you have to give!
What do we do now to recover from freeze damage in Tennesse garden? It's been almost two weeks since our landscaping was badly damaged by 6 nights of frost near Nashville. What do we do and when can we do it. Nandina had lots of new, soft growth, all of which froze. Can I prune this damaged area back now that frost danger is gone? What about rhododendron? A baby Japanese maple had all the leaves freeze. I know not to fertilize, but I'm wondering whether there is anything I can do to make it easier for the plants to recover. I have extra concern as most of this was installed in October and was having a big burst of early season growth due to the hot spell we had. Please give me as much detail as possible.

Will a neem oil pesticide effect the taste of my herb garden? I was just wondering if using neem oil as a pesticide would make the plants that I am growing taste bad to me or just to the Japanese beetles trying to kill them.
Can anyone suggest a tree to screen our garden from our neighbours? We'd like to plant a tree as close to our house as possible to screen the view from our neighbours' upstairs window. It would need to grow at least 25ft tall and we would like to plant within 10ft of the house. We've considered silver birch, acers (Japanese Maple) and palm trees. We live on the South coast UK with a clay but fertile soil.

Do Japanese Beetles really hate marigolds? We recently had an infestation of Japanese Beetles in our yard - right around our vegetable garden. The odd thing is that they have not touched any of the vegetable plants but are clustered (as in completely covering) the marigold plants we planted around the garden to deter rabbits. All the info I can find states that the beetles HATE marigolds and that they are great deterants. So why are they focusing on and destroying my marigolds? Are they more of a trap plant - keeping the beetles away from the vegetables or what?
Best place to go on a date / is this place good? I'm taking a girl I'm absolutely ga-ga for on our 3rd date, and need some ideas. I thought my idea was great, but a few people have shot me down.. What are your thoughts? Where was the best place you've gone on a date? ..I was thinking I can take her to his massive outdoor japanese garden place. It's really tranquil and theres plenty of shade to just sit and talk, learn more about each other in a really quite, nice setting. They have Japanese plants and animals- the whole thing surrounds a lake with koy fish even! An authentic Japanese restaurant is there- and is quite the experience. =) Thank you, I'm glad to know I'm not the only one who thinks it's a good idea!! Anyone else????

help me fix some stuff? Kate I am 13 year old. I was born in Japan. My family and I move to Cleveland. In Cleveland, I don’t have any friends. I miss mine friend in Japan. Back in Japan ,my family always planted Japanese maple tree. The maple tree was bright red and that one of my favorite color. Now that is all gone. I have to go to school everyday. I only know a little bit of English. I had a home to write about my own culture. After school I start walking home. I saw this name mane Sae Young. She gave me a job to help her swept the floor in her store. I rush home to tell mine mom and dad. I saw this girl call Kim with Ana in the garden planting lima beans. I was thinking about planting a Japanese maple tree to remind me of Japan. I wrote my culture was a kimono dress up in pretty coats and started dancing .When I was done with mine work. I thought that I should plant a Japanese maple tree. The next day I saw Ana watering the plants. I planted my Japanese maple tree next to the Kim s’ plants. Last night ,I saw Kim ,Ana , Wendell ,and Sam there watering my tree, I went out side and talk to them even through I don’t talk to people much. But at least I should say thank you for watering mine tree. I talk to Kim about the garden and what is she planting next. The next day I went and help Sae Young swept the floor for her store. Then I went to school .I cant wait till after school so I can see the garden. I feel happier now since Kim talk to me and help with the garden. Back home, I was thinking about asking my parent to help with the garden. The next day I went to school. I saw this new kid call Gonzalo he was new to this school and he was the same room as me. He sit next to me in class. I said “hi” to him.Gonzald said “hi back”. I ask him where he live? He said he live at that apartment where I live. I told him about the garden near the lot .Gonzalo said ‘‘he want to help ’’.So I told him we could go plant at the garden after school. We had a lot of homework. So Gonzalo and I did our homework at a park. When we finish with our homework. We start walking to the apartment .We saw Sae Young there watering the plants in the garden. It was late at night. Gonzalo and I just smile at Sae Young and then walk inside the apartment. Then I wave good bye to Gonzalo. When I got home .My father ask me “How was school today?” I said it was good. Then I start telling my dad about the garden and the friends I made. Also the people who help water the tree and the plants like Kim, Ana and Wendell. My dad was surprise and was so proud of me that I make so much friends. Kim knock at mine door and give me some vegetable that she planted. I said “thank you to her. This time when I went to school. I stop by Sae Young s’ store and give her some vegetable that Kim give to me.Sae Young said “I was so kind.” At school Gonzalo ask me if I want to meet his parent they were thinking of planting something in the garden. I said “yes’’. Then the teacher start teaching math .We had so little homework that day. So I finish my homework very quickly. After school Gonzalo play soccer with me. This is like the friends I had in Japan. I didn’t feel homesick anymore. I went to meet Gonzalo s’ parents. They were kind. I went home .Out the window I saw Nora planting flowers in the garden with Mr.Myles.I smile at them. When I was eating dinner I ask my mother “How did you feel when we have to leave Japan and come to Cleveland ?” She just said “As long as we have good friends, good neighbors and we are together. I was always be happy. That night I call my best friend In Japan. I told her all about the garden and the friend I made. okay help me find any mistake. The one wh o fine the most miskate get best answer

Behavior of Male Betta--Flaring? My betta is constantly flaring at me. Put a finger to the glass, or simply lean in to look at him and he'll swim over to flare at you. Is this a sign that he is feeling good and happy, or is he unhappy and annoyed? He is in a 10 gallon tank on his own with a few live plants and a Japanese garden accessory in the corner. The tank has a bubble filter and is temp. regulated to stay around 75 degrees.
First vegetable garden? So I bought 12 Japaneses cucumber seedlings and need to know how far apart I need to plant them. I am a little bit short on space so I am willing to use stakes to keep them up. Also do they require full sun? And I live in San Diego California. Thanks everyone. All of your answers are very helpful and I can't decide on which is the best so I'll just put it up for voting.
